2012 Meeting: BioRubber for Europe in Global Perspective
  Background

The Department of Plant Molecular Biology (DBMV) of the University of Lausanne (UNIL) is one of the leading departments devoted to the study of plants at the molecular level in Switzerland and in Europe. It currently consists of more then 50 people, including 6 professors and 2 group leader positions who primarily use Arabidopsis, rice and the moss Physcomitrella patens to study various aspects of plant biology, including plant-pathogen and plant-insect interactions, root development, fatty acid metabolism, protein biochemistry, formation of the cuticle, phosphate transport and biopolymer synthesis.

The laboratory of Prof. Yves Poirier has investigated fatty acid metabolism, the carbon flux feeding into the ß-oxidation cycle, and the synthesis of biopolymers in both plants and yeast, with over 30 publications in peer-reviewed journals. With regard to biopolymers, the laboratory has been a leader in studying the synthesis in plants and yeast of polyhydroxyalkanoates, natural biodegradable bacterial polyesters having plastic and elastomeric properties.
