  Background

Plant Research International (PRI)
is an independent research institute working within the Department of Plant Sciences of the Wageningen University and Research Centre. PRI  specialises in strategic and applied research in the field of plant breeding and agro-production. The combination of knowledge and experience in genetics and reproduction, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics, crop protection, crop ecology and agrosystems, enables us to offer a unique range of perspectives for government and industry. PRI serves the entire agro-production chain with scientific products, from the DNA level to production system concepts.

The business units Bioscience and Plant Breeding focus on research into genetic and physiological processes, using state-of-the-art tools in the field of molecular biology (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics), physics and informatics, aimed at studying the regulation, organisation and molecular coordination of metabolic routes, and plant development and reproduction. Areas of special interest are: regulation of metabolic pathways (a.o. flavonoids, terpenoids and fructans) and molecular signalling in plant-pathogen interactions. The business unit Plant Breeding has ample experience in domestication of new industrial crops (e.g. Lesquerella, Coryander, Crambe, Calendula, Lunaria, Euphorbia).
