Logo-IBOT The Institute of Botany (IBOT) is a major centre of botanical research in the Czech Republic. It is a medium sized research institute (about 90 scientists and PhD students), founded in 1961.



The principal activity of the IB is scientific research covering:
  • field botanical disciplines, especially taxonomy and biosystematics of higher and lower plants (including algology, mycology, bryology, lichenology)
  • karyology
  • evolutionary biology
  • phytogeography
  • the study of the succession
  • classification and mapping of vegetation
  • the ecology of species and communities
  • palynology
  • field-based plant ecophysiology and population biology
  • the study of mycorrhizal symbioses
  • ecotoxicology
  • the study of functions, regeneration, protection and management of populations and ecosystems
  • the study of the anatomy of wood and dendrochronology
  • short-term and long-term climate monitoring
  • biomonitoring.
Furthermore, the IB provides care of genetic collections and is responsible for the regeneration, maintenance and management of Pruhonice Park. IB carries out doctoral study programmes and provides training for young scientists.
