The Agrotechnology and Food Innovations B.V. (A&F) group of Wageningen University and Research Centre provides fundamental, strategic and applied research to enable rapid transfer of academic knowledge to the market. The Business Unit ‘Bio-based Products’ has a strong focus on primary streams of biomass and bio-residues to produce sustainable industrial raw materials, green chemicals (added value products) and bio-energy, and has extensive experience / expertise in:

  • Biomass conversion, taking into account biomass composition, availability and costs;
  • Physical, chemical and enzymatic pre-treatment of biomass;
  • Microbial biochemistry, physiology and genomics, bioprocess technology and optimization of fermentation processes.

Important topics are the production and application of a variety of biopolymers including bacterial cellulose, starch, polyhydroxyalkanoates, polylactic acid, collagenous peptides and cyanophycin.
