2010 Meeting: The future of natural rubber
2012 Meeting: BioRubber for Europe in Global Perspective
  Background

The 2012 meeting: "BioRubber for Europe in Global Perspective", now being organized by the EU-PEARLS consortium to mark the end of the FP7 EU-PEARLS research project, will take place in Wageningen, The Netherlands, on September 24-25, 2012.

"BioRubber for Europe in Global Perspective” will bring together researchers, industry representatives and policymakers from Europe, North America, Asia and Africa, interested in the development of alternative sources of natural rubber as:
  • a strategic fallback option, in case current threats to Hevea rubber become reality: South American Leaf Blight, climate change, or high labor costs
  • an additional source of natural rubber, in case the market demand cannot be satisfied by Hevea rubber
  • a source of rubber with new properties providing commercial opportunities
The meeting will be an excellent opportunity for research organizations and industry to report and discuss alternative sources of natural rubber, with themes including germplasm collection, breeding, biochemistry and genetics of rubber biosynthesis, agronomy, processing, product development, by-products, socioeconomic aspects (policies, consequences for labor market, rural areas, factors affecting the introduction and market chances of alternative crops).

Four lecture sessions, with poster sessions during lunch and in the afternoon, will focus on the following topics:
  • The economical prospects of natural rubber in a changing world
  • Plant breeding and genetics, isoprenoid biosynthesis, analytical methods
  • Agronomy, processing and biorefining
  • Applications of latex/rubber and co-products from (alternative) sources of natural rubber
Keynote speakers:
  • Fazilet Cinaralp, Secretary General of the ETRMA, the European tyre and rubber manufacturers' association
  • Dennis Ray, University of Arizona, Tucson, USA
  • Daniel Pioch, CIRAD, Montpellier, France
  • Jacques Noordermeer, University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands
